Instrument Finishing

Guitar finishing is the process of applying protective and decorative coatings to the body, neck, and headstock of a guitar. A well-done finish enhances the instrument's appearance, protects the wood from damage, and can also subtly affect its tonal qualities. Here are some common types of guitar finishes and their descriptions:

Nitrocellulose Lacquer

Description: A traditional finish that allows the wood to "breathe," often associated with vintage guitars.

Characteristics: Ages gracefully, developing a natural patina and checking over time. More delicate than modern finishes.

Gloss Finish

Description: A high-shine, reflective finish that highlights the wood grain and any color or artwork.

Characteristics: Durable and resistant to wear. Popular for electric and acoustic guitars.

Common Materials: Polyurethane, polyester, or nitrocellulose lacquer.

Satin or Matte Finish

Description: A smooth, low-shine finish that feels natural and reduces glare.

Characteristics: Provides a more understated, vintage look and allows the wood's texture to be more noticeable.

Common Materials: Satin versions of polyurethane or nitrocellulose.

Polyurethane or Polyester

Description: Durable and glossy finishes common on modern guitars.

Characteristics: Resistant to scratches and wear, often thicker than nitrocellulose.

Oil Finish

Description: A thin, natural-looking finish that penetrates the wood rather than forming a thick layer on top.

Characteristics: Feels raw and organic, but provides minimal protection. Common for necks and fretboards.

Sunburst Finish

Description: A gradient finish where the color transitions from a lighter center to darker edges.

Characteristics: Classic look, often used on acoustic and semi-hollow electric guitars.

Metallic or Sparkle Finish

Description: Vibrant finishes that incorporate metallic flakes or pigments.

Characteristics: Eye-catching and modern, used in many electric guitar designs.

Relic Finish

Description: A distressed finish that mimics the appearance of a well-worn vintage guitar.

Characteristics: Includes intentional wear marks, checking, and tarnished hardware.

Transparent Finish

Description: Highlights the natural grain of the wood while adding color or protection.

Characteristics: Often used with figured woods like flame maple or quilted maple.

Solid Color Finish

Description: A uniform, opaque finish in a wide range of colors.

Characteristics: Provides a clean, modern look and is popular in electric guitars.

Each finish has unique properties, and the choice depends on aesthetics, desired feel, and tonal considerations. Proper preparation, including sanding and sealing, is crucial for achieving a smooth, professional result. Please contact for pricing $$$
